Just Had
the Strangest Sense of Déjà Vu
(Collage poem based on Will Newsome* and This Day Forever)
“The springtime curtains in
the living room caused it
also… and now a set of red
traffic lights peering out
through bare tree limbs.”*
Springtime curtains gather dust and fold
Around the blinds and rotting windowsills
Facing northeast, like a bashful sun
Deciding if today is too easy
A day to walk away,
Because the pines have been leveled and cut
Too short to keep out his rays.
What burns the eye as quickly as looking up
Touches any
Socket of memory
Against every barren limb
Reaching into its clouded sky, and then
Blazes through midafternoon. The worst yet
Will come like thunder, catching every songbird wherever
You crash and catch yourself, quarter flight,
Outside of dirty windows and blinds, back
Behind the wheel and spinning
Through green, speeding
Away before yellow turns red.

God and Devil always by my side

I want to shine my bright so I play with my dark
Steady to balance out the head and the heart
Digging through endings to get back to the start
And find myself again

Wood, hammer, and nails
Out of every sin,
Every time that I failed
Never asked to play savior
Never was a part of my plan
Nothing more than just a man
So I carry these stones

In 2010 tensions ran high and brothers Ken and Will Newsome decided an unofficial break was needed for the band...In 2019 Ken tragically passed away.
